What is Osteoporisis?

Osteoporosis means porous bones. Osteopenia is the early stage of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a degenerative disease of the skeletal system that is characterized by the deterioration of bone tissue, along with the decrease in bone mass making them fragile and more likely to break. This is a silent disease affecting1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over the age of fifty in Ireland, although all age groups can be affected.

Osteoporosis results from an imbalance between the ingestion and absorption of calcium into the body and its excretion. Loss of bone-building materials can occur as the body ages, and is particularly prevalent among post-menopausal women.

What We Do

The physiotherapist will assess and review each client individually. Exercise is a key element in bone health and not just any exercise.
In order to improve bone health a few types of exercise are used to make the bones tougher and less vulnerable to fracture.

Bone Density Scanning

The scan is carried out on the radius (lower arm) and tibia (shin) and is part of your consultation with us. Because the scan is non-invasive and radiation free, it can be carried out regularly to monitor your progress with our program, in between your 2 yearly DXA scans.

Laboratory Tests

A wide range of laboratory tests are available to you at our clinic. These tests are recommended according to your individual symptoms and needs, the results will allow us to optimise your ongoing protocols and progression. Regulation of all the body’s systems is paramount for bone health.

Nutrition
