Osteoporosis results from an imbalance between the ingestion and absorption of calcium into the body and its excretion. The architecture of bone requires many nutrients to maintain and restore its integrity but there are at least 20 essential vitamins and minerals that have to be obtained from food. Several natural interventions promote increased bone health. These include sufficient consumption of bone-supportive nutrients through healthy eating and nutritional supplements where needed according to each individual and laboratory testing.
Causes:
- Genetics/Family history
- Certain diseases/conditions including: Thyroid, Coeliac, Crohns, Rheumatoid arthritis, Eating disorders, Impaired mobility
- Medication which affects hormonal balance or bone strength such as corticosteroids/steroids, thyroid hormones, aluminum containing antacids and loop diuretics, certain chemotherapy drugs, anticonvulsants, anticoagulants
- Poor diet and lack of enzymes
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Poor uptake of minerals from the diet due to low acid levels in the stomach or other causes of malabsorption of food
- Intestinal diseases
- Stress-may cause low acid levels in the stomach, high cortisol, tissue acidity and inflammation
- Inflammation/Inflammatory conditions leading to cartilage and bone destruction
- An acidic diet/high cortisol may cause calcium to be leached from the bones to restore the acid/alkaline balance
- Low minerals and bone building nutrients in the diet
- Lack of Vitamin C
- Caffeine, sugar, red meat and carbonated drinks affect calcium absorption or increase calcium excretion.
- Heavy drinking or smoking
- Decrease in oestrogen
- Lack of weight bearing exercise
- Lack of sunshine
